5 Common Pressure Washing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Pressure washing looks simple — point, spray, done. In practice, a few common mistakes are behind most of the damaged surfaces and disappointing results we get called out to fix. Here are the five we see most often, and how to avoid them.

1. Using Too Much Pressure on Delicate Surfaces

The pressure that's perfectly safe on a concrete driveway can strip paint, etch render, or force water behind cladding on a house exterior. Match the method to the surface: high pressure for concrete and pavers, low-pressure soft washing for anything painted, rendered, or clad.

2. Holding the Wand Too Close

The closer the nozzle, the more concentrated the force on one spot. Working too close — especially with a narrow-angle tip — is one of the most common causes of etching and stripe marks that don't come out. Keep the wand moving in smooth, overlapping passes from a consistent distance.

3. Skipping a Test Patch

Every surface responds a little differently depending on age, material and condition. Testing an inconspicuous area first takes two minutes and can save you from finding out the hard way that a surface doesn't handle the pressure you're using.

4. Using the Wrong Nozzle

A narrow, pinpoint tip concentrates far more force than a wide fan tip, even at the same PSI. Most general cleaning is better suited to a 25–40 degree fan tip; pinpoint tips are really only for tackling stubborn, isolated stains on surfaces that can handle it.

5. Blasting Mould and Algae Instead of Treating It

High pressure can remove the visible mould or algae on the surface, but if the roots aren't treated, it typically grows back within weeks.
